AMC fees at a glance (checked 16 October 2026)
Initial portfolio $642. CAT MCQ $2,920. Clinical exam $3,000 in person or $3,400 online. Workplace-based assessment $1,070. The AMC stopped charging a card surcharge from 1 October 2026 and says its fees are otherwise unchanged.
Most IMGs I speak to underestimate what the Standard Pathway costs, mainly because the fees are paid at different stages over a year or more. Here is every AMC fee in one place, taken from the AMC fees and charges page, with what you will pay in total for the usual routes.
Current AMC fees
| Item | Fee (AUD) |
|---|---|
| Initial portfolio (includes one qualification) | $642 |
| Each additional qualification added to your AMC account | $107 |
| CAT MCQ examination | $2,920 |
| Clinical examination, in person | $3,000 |
| Clinical examination, online | $3,400 (includes the $400 online levy) |
| Workplace-based assessment (WBA) | $1,070 |
| Reissue of MCQ or clinical results | $107 |
| Clinical appeal application (includes one station) | $910 |
| Each additional clinical appeal station | $235 |
Fees are paid at each stage, not upfront. The clinical exam fee, for example, is paid in full when you schedule your exam.
What the Standard Pathway costs in total
Using the fees above, these are the AMC charges for each route, assuming one qualification and a pass at each step:
| Route | AMC fees | Total |
|---|---|---|
| Portfolio, CAT MCQ, clinical exam in person | $642 + $2,920 + $3,000 | $6,562 |
| Portfolio, CAT MCQ, clinical exam online | $642 + $2,920 + $3,400 | $6,962 |
| Portfolio, CAT MCQ, workplace-based assessment | $642 + $2,920 + $1,070 | $4,632 |
Workplace-based assessment is an alternative to the clinical exam, but it is only open to candidates working in an accredited WBA program. Most candidates take the clinical exam.
What a resit costs
Each attempt is charged in full. If you need to resit the clinical exam, add another $3,000 in person or $3,400 online, and expect to wait for the next release of places. In practice, sitting when you are ready is the biggest saving you can make.
Costs outside the AMC
The AMC fees are not the whole budget. Depending on your situation, also plan for:
- An English language test, if the Medical Board requires one from you.
- Travel and accommodation for an in-person clinical exam.
- Medical Board of Australia registration fees once you are ready to apply.
- Study materials, practice partners and any preparation course you choose.
Check those fees with the organisation concerned, as they change separately from the AMC's.
Ways to keep the cost down
- Book the clinical exam when your timed practice is consistent, not on the first date you can get. A resit costs more than any extra month of preparation.
- Compare in person and online. Online costs $400 more but may save you a flight and hotel, and IMGs working in rural and remote Australia get priority for it.
- Add every qualification once, at the start, so you are not paying $107 later for something you could have included.
- Pay with Mastercard or Visa. Since 1 October 2026 there is no card surcharge.
